This spring we filled our new high tunnel with tomatoes. A dozen different varieties. We planted determinates and indeterminates. Some are cherry tomatoes, some are “cocktail” size, some are little plum tomatoes, some are huge plum tomatoes, some are gigantic slicing varieties. Some are pink, purple, yellow, and even red. Most of the plants are thriving! Yet, some plants are suffering from “too much” May water or “too little” July water. And this week the tomato horn worms have shown up for the feast.
As Guy Clark sang: “Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes. What’d life be without homegrown tomatoes. Only two things that money can’t buy. That’s true love & homegrown tomatoes.”
I still think of our farm as just my little backyard garden gone a bit crazy. We are growing homegrown tomatoes, and yes, you can buy our tomatoes. We have to enjoy them as often as we can while they are red, ripe, and bursting with flavor. You’re not going to get this deliciousness in January!
But as the Beatles said: “money can’t buy me love, no, no no no!”
