baby chicks

The first batch of Cornish Cross broiler chicks have arrived, eighty very loud energetic voracious babies. It’s always amazing what instincts they have. We receive these chicks as day old peeps. They have never met their mother, she has never had the opportunity to teach them what to do to survive.

But somehow they know. The know how to drink, how to peck and scratch to find food, how to cuddle up with their flock-mates under the heat lamp to keep warm. And they know to scatter whenever the noisy farmer pokes her head in and says “hey kids”.
